Higgs Track
Higgs Track
Distance: 11 km | Time: 4 hours | Start: Dale Brook Road
Originally established in the 1870s for grazing cattle in the Great Western Tiers, Higgs Track is a rewarding day walk near Mole Creek. It’s not only steeped in early pioneering history but it offers spectacular views across the Meander Valley and traverses a diversity of vegetation.
Higgs Track begins on a relatively flat path that meanders through the open forest of Dale Brook before beginning a steep climb to the lower ridges of the escarpment. The zigzagging trail passes through a wet sclerophyll forest dominated by myrtles and sassafras, with cairns marking the route as you enter a tract of subalpine rainforest.
Once above the tree line, you’ll be treated to impressive views of the tier and the plains of the Meander Valley below. The trail continues across the plateau for around 300 metres to Lady Lake Hut, which is the perfect spot to stop for lunch. You can extend your walk by visiting some of the nearby tarns, such as Lake Lucy Long, Lake Nameless and Westons Lake or return via the same route.
To reach the start of Higgs Track, take the Mole Creek road from Deloraine and drive for 15 kilometres before turning left onto Dairy Plains Road. You then need to turn right onto Western Creek Road, followed by a left onto Westrope Road and another right onto Dale Brook Road. Higgs Track begins at a signposted parking area near the end of the road.
